Dieter_Meier_profile…I always tell stories. For me, it’s an impromptu sharing experience. Sometimes I’ll talk a whole five minutes to the audience before starting the next song…” (Dieter Meier at a conversation with Bryan Ferry in 2011)

Dieter Meier is a Swiss musician and artist who has come a long way since 1979 when he was chosen by Boris Blank and Carlos Perón, as the lead singer of their band Yello. Since 1969 he has produced experimental films  ( i.e. ‘Jetzt und Alles’, ‘Lightmaker’) which were presented in festivals around the world, he was the director of Alphaville’s videoclip for their famous song ‘Big in Japan’, he created street art in Zurich, Munich and New York while he has also provided articles and essays for several magazines. tokeeTokee a.k.a  Anatoly Grinberg has just released his fifth full length album called ‘Bouquiniste‘. Tokee focuses mainly on idm, ambient, psych trance sounds which he mixes with dexterity . It is remarkable how the main theme of each song is recurring throughout the song and is not lost as is usually the case with psych trance and ambient music. It is not common to listen to the musical thoughts of a musician from Tel Aviv who has also been taught by Frank Zappa’s sound engineer, Ami Hadani. Hadani, was also a general in the Israeli Air Force and founder of TTG Studios. (more…)

In the aftermath of a ritualistic live gig by Fire+ Ice which had as support bands While Angels Watch and Knotwork,  it’s time to start preparing ourselves for a more melodic upcoming live gig which will take place at Electrowerkz on Saturday July 12. The headliners, Kirlian Camera, is a band I personally adore and the support bands will be Naevus and Rome.

How does one introduce a favourite band without risking being favourable? Somehow it seems that the best way to do this is by adopting the same approach as for talking about a dear and old acquaintance.

Kirlian Camera’s name has been inspired by Kirlian photography also known as electrography which is a technique used to capture the phenomenon of electrical coronal discharges and has been the subject of scientific and parapsychology research. Kirlian Camera is Angelo Bergamini’s band which now counts 35 years of history. 13 albums after the release of the first self title 12’’, mark the long path of musical and stylistic transformations that the band has followed since their debut gig in Spring 1980 on the occasion of the Italian Gay Pride party. The band’s line up was constantly changing with four female singers preceding Elena Alice Fossi who officially began the collaboration with the band in 2000. (more…)

July seems to be one of these months which offer a nice combination of live gigs by long time loved bands of the dark scene who pay a visit to London!
I feel compelled to talk a bit about the headliners of these two live events: Fire+ Ice and Kirlian Camera and this is the first part which will focus on Fire+Ice

First things first, the gig ‘Fire+ Ice, While Angels Watch and Knotwork‘ should actually be called ‘Fire+ Ice, (Blood Axis side project )Knotwork and While Angels Watch‘, since Knotwork is actually formed by Blood Axis with an additional member Don Schabner who has provided backing vocals and plays the guitar in the recently released EP ‘3×3’. It is rare and not expected to see Annabel Lee and Michael Moynihan live so we have to point this out since they occasionally perform songs by Blood Axis when they play as Knotwork. For this tour Blood Axis’ producer and member Robert Ferbrache is joining Annabel Lee and Michael Moynihan playing the guitar. The poster describes the music of Knotwork as traditional however this is not such an very accurate description and listening to the four songs of the EP will help you more. It’s been 5 years since the last release ‘Noir Magnetique‘ by the french avant garde, experimental, industrial band Die Form and at the beginning of last month the EP ‘Schaulust‘ was released from Out of Line, paving the way for their full length album ‘Rayon Xexpected to be released on 4 July 2014. Die Form is the only band which has integrated so successfully and in an original way, fetish aesthetics in their work. Being consistent, since 1977 when their first cassette was released, Philippe Fichot and Éliane P. have always offered albums which are genuine pieces of art, handling fetishism in an artistic and appealing way. Their live performances don’t fall behind and kinesiology as well as their appearance paint a very unique picture in front of our eyes with their music complementing the spectacle in an ideal way. Bondage and s/m have been combined with the dramatic art of Butoh (which resembles an ancient greek tragedy) and in the recent past a dancer accompanied the band on stage perfecting the live performance!

Schaulusthas been released in 696 copies and consists of 4 songs. The dance electro element is stronger than the industrial atmosphere however it is more than obvious that this EP continues where ‘Masochist’ stopped. The overall mood seems to be less ominous and dark as well. I consider this EP as a teaser to ‘Rayon X’ and I can’t wait for it to be released!

We’ve waited too long for this album by Ataraxia and after the slight disappointment that the album/soundtrack ‘Spasms‘ offered, ‘Wind at Mount Elo‘ is expected to live up to our high hopes. After all Ataraxia is a music band with 21 years of history and a unique way of producing and performing ethereal, dark conceptual music. Francesca Nicoli is one of my favourite female singers and along with Diamanda Galas and Lisa Gerrard i think that she has a unique way of touching chords of our souls which nobody might have the chance or the ability to stimulate. Daemonia Nymphe is a Greek band created by Spyros and Pandelis Giasafakis in 1994 and since then, they have inspired their audience in Europe incessantly, by offering a unique combination of strong and dynamic melodies, interesting rhythmic and stylistic alterations within their compositions as well as unforgettable live performances. Daemonia Nymphe are collaborating with a dexterous manufacturer of traditional music instruments in Greece, Nikolaos Brass, who is providing them  with hand made ancient greek instruments which are resurrected through the band’s music. Thus the band is offering a unique experience to their audiences to see and listen to these instruments on stage. To those of you who will listen to this band for the first time, I can only say that the sound  is unique, drawing inspiration from  traditional greek music, world, eastern and balkan music traditions and creating an original sound with unending inspiration with the contribution of various collaborators throughout their career. Having attended recently an inspiring, and utterly interesting live performance at The Lexington of London (live review will follow soon) of this ethereal/ethnic/traditional but overall authentic band, Daemonia Nymphe, I would like to encourage all of you to attend ‘Psychostasia: The Performance’ on 23/3/14 at Riverside Studios in London.
