1277489_635007626522635_1018637010_oThe year was 1975 and there appeared a band whose sound cut through the Mississippi blues and the country songs of Missouri, putting keyboards, string instruments and astonishing vocals in the middle of a guitar based music industry. Pavlov’s Dog is a band whose name drew attention to the controversial experiment that helped (?) understand the relationship between a stimulus and the reaction to it. The release of the band’s debut album entitled ‘Pampered Menial’ in 1975 featured at the cover, an almost hypnotized and agitated dog alluding to Ivan Pavlov’s experiment. The vocals and the mind-numbing delivery of the lyrics left a permanent mark on everyone who listened to this album. It is one thing to expect a great debut album from a band but it’s quite another to be hit with the melody of ‘Julia’, the very first track of the debut album and David Skurkamp’s voice which has this admirable and other-worldly tremble! 41 years have passed and this song’ s impact has not lessened. Let’s not forget that 1975 was the middle of the glam rock, progressive rock and punk frenzy. It was the time of  early experimentation with electronic music and the period when designing an album’s artwork was equally important and time consuming as recording and producing the music of this album.

715q78U-a9L._SL1070_Peter Murphy needs no introductions. The voice of the legendary Bauhaus, dubbed ‘Godfather of Goth’, has always released music which has the quality of a very powerful magnet. Especially during his live shows, Peter Murphy reveals his unique and mesmerizing way of creating a different ‘character’ for each song and each story of the lyrics. Whether through powerful facial expressions and very expressive gestures or through these long baritone screams that make you believe that he calls from the other end of the world, Peter Murphy offers a theatrical delivery of every piece of music he has released!

I have been fortunate to have seen Bauhaus perform live at a special one off gig in O2 Brixton Academy and have never missed a single solo show by Peter Murphy in London in the last 8 years. My impression is the same and is only becoming stronger; He never ‘betrays’ the stories of the lyrics and never compromises on the aesthetics of a live show. Maybe the term ‘Godfather of Goth’ is actually true (in a symbolic way) and if it wasn’t, then Peter Murphy wouldn’t have inspired Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean to design the character of Dream based on him, nor would he had inspired the design of Eric’s face on James O’ Barr’s comic book ‘The Crow’.

James King And The Lonewolves

Of all the existing bands of Stereogram, I believe that James King And The Lonewolves a.k.a James King (vocals/guitar), Jake Mason (guitar/vocals), Joe Sullivan (guitar), Nick Clark (bass), Corey Little ( drums), is the one that has more evident rock ‘n roll influences in terms of riffs and atmosphere. Formed in 1981 in Glasgow, the band’s name is a tribute to ‘Hank Williams With His Drifting Cowboys’ and occurred after the previous name of the band ‘Death Trip’ (a tribute to a Stooge’s song) was abandoned. James King and The Lonewolves have released three singles ‘I Tried/So Alone’, ‘Texas Lullaby’ and ‘The Angels Know’ in 1981, 1983 and 1985 respectively. James King and The Lonewolves have also supported Nico in Glasgow in November 1981. Theatricality in the live performances and passion, are the strongest elements in the delivery of the lyrics and by listening carefully to this band’s songs I perceived them more and more as a cross between Iggy Pop and Marianne Faithfull. Having recovered from a break in communication that lasted 25 years, James King and Jake McKechan released the singles ‘Pretty Blues Eyes/ Fun Patrol’ while the older album entitled ‘Lost Songs of the Confederacy’ that was recorded with John Cale was remastered and has been released through Stereogram Recordings.

Have you ever wondered what (if anything) do Greenwich Village, New York in the 1970s, the soundtracks of Tarantino’s films, Andy Warhol’s sources of inspiration and America’s and Great Britain’s ‘60s and 70’s music scenes have in common? One of the many answers, should be Stereogram Recordings. And just before your imagination starts to race let me say that there are many ‘umbrella’ labels in the indie genre and very few manage to unveil a true character through the artists they represent. Most record labels in the indie genre share a love and passion for music, yet it is evident that not all of them manage to avoid representing a very specific sub-genre of a very specific style. Stereogram Recordings is one of the labels that we have been following for a while now and we have noticed that Jeremy Thoms, the founder of the label seems to have found not one, but many complementary denominators in the music of the bands that are represented in the label. Since the internet era has cast a heavy shadow to both the independent and the mainstream scene it’s all about how much one adheres to the idea that ‘God is in the details’ that differentiates one ‘umbrella’ label from the other. I think that Jeremy Thoms keeps an eye on the ‘big picture’ that the sound of Stereogram likes to draw, a picture of 1000 pieces created on the axes that the music scenes of some parts of America and some parts of Great Britain were developed.

Based in Edinburgh, Stereogram Recordings has so far released the albums of 9 bands, none of which fits in any of the once clearly defined music genres. The bands by descending order of number of releases are: Band of Holy Joy, James King and The Lonewolves, Roy Moller, The Cathode Ray, The Fabulous Artisans, New Leaf, Milton Star, Lola in Slacks, St Christopher Medal. Some of these bands might even be inspired by the same musician yet none delivers a similar or even comparable result. There is one thing that one has no doubt about, the passion for music and the commitment of musicians to release music of such a quality that nothing less than our full attention can grasp it. None of Stereogram’s bands play ‘easy to digest’ music and none of the musicians rely on simplistic melodies or ideas. This is apparent in all of the lyrics of all of their songs and can also be noticed through the multitude of social, artistic references that are being made in their videos.

Should it be ignored that Jeremy Thoms (The Cathode Ray, New Leaf, The Fabulous Artisans), Johny Brown (Band Of Holy Joy) and Roy Moller, all consider that music, spoken word, theatre and the space in between are inseparable elements ? I don’t think so. In different ways and intensities, these three musicians have incorporated both the theatrical and the surreal aspect of poetry in their performances throughout the years and this is another strong element in the sound of Stereogram.

81WpX3CP+wL._SL1500_The Cult were formed in Bradford in 1983 under the name Southern Death Cult. The significance of the name of the band was twofold: In one part, it was a reference to the term ‘Southeastern ceremonial complex’ that was used to encapsulate stylistic similarities that were found in different cultural aspects of the Mississipi area between 1200-1650. At the same time, ‘Southern Death Cult’ was a way to criticize the fact that London was (and still is), the city where most cultural and economic activities were being concentrated. ‘Southern Death Cult’ was eventually shortened to ‘Death Cult’ and then to the simpler ‘The Cult’ and this has been the name under which we have known the band for many years.

We had an idea about how overwhelming 2016 would be but the news keep coming and the year that has just started with some sad and devastating news, seems to be very promising on the front of album releases and gigs! I will start by order of the oldest musician.

profileFour years have passed since Barry Adamson last appeared on stage of Queen Elizabeth Hall carrying two white maracas on his hands (he introduced them to us as ‘Dave’ and ‘Henry’). On January of that same year, 2012, the album ‘I Will Set You Free’ was released. This was an album that was moving in soul and funky rhythms with a few rock twists here and there .The sound of ‘I Will Set You Free was miles away from ‘Moss Side Story’, aesthetically different from ‘The King of Nothing Hill’ and closer to ‘Back To The Cat’.  Barry Adamson is a multifarious artist who, apart from music, has written, directed and scored a number of short films.Central Control International is the label that Barry Adamson has set up and through which he releases his music since 2006. Music that comes from a man like him, involved in many other artistic disciplines, is never a familiar kind of sound but always one that takes us to other dimensions or even shows us ‘the least travelled path’ in our familiar dimensions. Early in 2015 Barry Adamson announced that he was working on yet another more commercialundertaking which will culminate in the release of his 10th solo album entitled ‘Know Where To Run’ on February 19, 2016.
