Monthly playlist-Favourite albums October 2022

logo playlist It is always the melancholic, the eerie and the mysterious elements in music that tell the most interesting stories. We embrace Autumn and the coming Winter with a soundtrack for a dance bizarre of ghosts – real or imaginary – and creatures of the night. This month, our favourite independent music releases covered the punk, IDM, ethereal, neoclassical, downtempo and rock dimensions of the sonic spectrum. We particularly salute the beautiful come back of The Cult with a release of their new album entitled ‘Under The Midnight Sun’ as well as the new offering by Nox Arcana – ‘Darkfall’, like clockwork in time for the celebration of Samhain.

Monthly playlist- Favourite albums August 2022

logo playlist The acceptance of a condition described by the word ‘bizarre’ must come when enveloped by a sinister soundscape. The dreamy state that ensues after such an acceptance should have elements of hypnotic psychedelia. You must listen to this playlist for two reasons: it contains an ancient curse set to music and one of the strangest, more obscure and obscene releases of the year so far. We are of course referring to the new album ‘Drift‘ by Heilung and the crazy release entitled ‘BORDELLOBUIO‘ by BAMBOLABUIO.

Monthly playlist-Favourite album July 2022

Dear Darklings, we hope you are all doing splendid! Our playlist this month opens up with some serious punk aphorisms, which are later been picked up from the metal music releases that we loved. During July, not only did we have the return of the punk heretics VIAGRA BOYS, but also that of Cabaret Voltaire’s stephen mallinder who offered us ‘tick tick tick . . .’ an addictively minimal techno album. Speaking of returns, INTERPOL stroke again, four years after the release of ‘Marauder’ with a beautiful indie rock album entitled ‘The Other Side of Make-Believe‘. If you are a fan of experimental music then the releases of Blue Orchids, K.Leimer, Gerry Read, Patrick Conway, Ben Shemie and Temple of Clear Light will be able to satisfy all tastes spanning post-punk, ambient with modern classical elements, and the most obscure dark ambient ceremonial sonic universes.

Monthly playlist-Favourite albums June 2022

logo playlist When all is said and done, there is only sound – sometimes deafening, sometimes imperceptible. Rhythms and melodies with or without words that can either trigger disquieting thoughts or treat wounds that few gestures can. Our favourite independent/underground music releases of this month, explore the experimental sides of post-punk and electronic music and share a melancholic worldview – whether it is through coldwave lyricism or through a more agitated even angry IDM and psychedelic one.

Monthly playlist- Favourite albums April 2022

logo playlist Dear darklings, the soundtrack of April 2022 is meant to get you off your seats. Its purpose is to rekindle your desire to go out dancing because, let’s face it, we’ve done enough dancing in our bedrooms over the last two years. If there is one thing we can conclude from the releases of the previous month, it is that, despite the world being in standstill, bands and musicians were working on new stuff behind the scenes. This month we had the comeback of Rammstein after three years with ‘Zeit’, an album the equal of ‘Liebe Ist Für Alle Da’. We also had the return of Archive with ‘Call to Arms & Angels’, original material coming six years after ‘The False Foundation’. Beloved punk disruptors CROWS have offered another addictive collection of songs in their sophomore album, while Sudden Infant have returned with a poetic, sometimes punk, sometimes noisy, minimalistic album, four years after ‘Buddhist Nihilism’. Speaking of punk, Lady Bird have made a powerful entrance onto the scene with ‘WE’, their debut album, and are now been on our radar as a ‘must see’ live band.

Monthly playlist- Favourite albums March 2022

logo playlist A month that includes new albums from Edward Ka-Spel and Current 93 is no ordinary month of the year, it outshines the previous ones and will do the rest (oh yes it will!). A month that resurrects our interest in the carefree 90s indie music scene with one of the best releases of PLACEBO to date, is definitely not a month to forget. We had incredibly dark, cynical (in terms of their lyrics), lyrical, poetic, haunting, releases during March – but overall they were all incredibly inspiring on some many levels. We have to draw your attention to the incredible experimentation of Alone In The Hollow Garden with instruments, and specifically the sonic dialogue between the electric saraswati veena and the electric sitar. The ceremonial aspect of the doom metal side of this monthly soundtrack is being represented mightily by the releases of The Nest and Egregore, while the emotionally lighter synthpop and post punk sides of it shine through the releases of Dear Deer, Rue Oberkampf, and Assassun. Industrial textures were craftily applied by Xotox to our all-time favourite ‘Popcorn’ while Kavinsky, Ben Lukas Boysen and BLVCK CEILING made sure that our addiction to dreamy, downtempo, trippy electronica was well-fed through their unique takes on each of these subgenres.

We feel that if we say more we might take time away from your enjoyment of this playlist. We hope you lose yourselves in it, in the same way we did while preparing it!

Monthly playlist- Favourite albums February 2022

logo playlist February was an absolute revelation compared to January in terms of its music releases. As yet, another war broke out just as lockdowns eased we enjoyed the unexpected return of some all-time favourite bands, the most prominent of which, was Tears for Fears. ‘The Tipping Point’, has come 16 years after their previous studio album and made us dance again to its 80s synthwave rhythms and all-familiar vibe of innocence and lightness.

logo playlist Are black holes cannibals or is the universe a cannibal? This monthly playlist aims at taking you on an experimental, dark sonic meditational journey that leaves the mind with a numbing sensation and the soul with a difficult-to-satisfy ‘hunger’. Starting off inside melodic and dark IDM sonic spaces, we are offering a trip into dark ambient, heavy psych rock, post-punk, coldwave soundscapes which ends on the top of a hill filled with Scottish folk melodies.

We were particularly excited for having Empusae‘s latest offering on this playlist, ‘Praeter‘, coming three years after his previous release. ‘Walls‘ the new release by Hollow Columns alongside Maya Shenfeld‘s ‘In Free Fall‘, added the dark ambient, poetic and cryptic tone that this conceptually obscure playlist needed in order to properly place itself in the realm of dark music. Further along, Vlimmer‘s new EP made us want to remind ourselves of the music of Diary of Dreams, while Biosphere‘s fascination with 70s post-punk electronics and the way this was translated into an improvisational psychedelia was a particularly fascinating moment during the creation of this playlist.

We hope you enjoy this playlist as much as we enjoyed making it.
