SUICIDE band flyerPunk was first born, as a word,  inside an article written by music critic Lester Bangs. Or maybe it was the opposite of the hippie movement just when this came to an end and long before it was invented as a word. Then came ‘Satan Suicide’ a story inside the comic book ‘Ghost Rider‘, a favourite of Alan Vega that inspired the name of the band. ”We were talking about society’s suicide, especially American society,” (extract from the book ‘Totally Wired‘). The meaning of punk music meant to be defined for the first time in America in the context of a flyer that was advertising a gig by Suicide in 1970 at  Museum:A Project of Living Artists (a communication and community center with social, aesthetic and political fluidity, which was initially run by artists). On November 1970, a few years before the punk subculture became a widespread attitude towards the system, art and life in general and before it created vibrant music scenes in New York, London, Melbourne, Sydney and Boston, the audience of this first gig by Suicide had a first taste of what punk music would sound and most importantly how it felt!

Suicide’s first homonymous album was released in 1977 and planted the seeds of experimental electronic music. The agonizing yet highly emotional and determined vocals coupled with caustic lyrics, created an atmosphere that has been unsurpassed until today. The atmosphere of this album inspired the attitude towards music that the pioneers of industrial music would adopt and evolve almost a decade later. The electrifying waves thaSUICIDE album covert the entire ‘Suicide’ album is sending up anybody’s spine coupled with the impression that one is under a constant, gradual and almost hypnotizing electric shock are just a few of the elements that make listening this album a unique experience that can’t be replicated by any other album of any other band.

Alan Vega has collaborated with Andrew Eldritch of The Sisters of Mercy for the release of the album ‘Gift’ by The Sisterhood and both Alan Vega and Martin Rev have released solo albums. So far, many musicians have listed Suicide as a major influence and covered some of their songs. Following the release of their 5th studio album ‘American Supreme’ in 2002, the band has performed their legendary first album in its entirety twice, in 2009 and in 2010 in two London concerts. ‘American Supreme‘ is an album that was received with mixed feelings. The album is performed in the unique agonizing way characteristic of Alan Vega and creates a haunting minimal electronic atmosphere in a way that only Suicide can achieve. In 2011 Agent Side Grinder who consider Suicide a major influence in their sound, shared the stage with Suicide in Switzerland and the recording of the whole gig was released in cassette format by Klangarkivet under the title ‘Suicide and Agent Side Grinder-Live in Switzerland’.

On 9th July 2015, Alan Vega and Martin Rev will appear live once again at the Barbican as part of Doug Aitken project entitled “Station to Station: A 30 Day Happening“. Suicide will bring some of the spirit of the 1970s with them, a glimpse into the beginning of punk culture which could provide valuable inspiration and motivation especially today when the world is going through a moral, economic and cultural crisis of equivalent importance with the end of the 1960s.

tumblr_inline_nqu2hr06eF1r9b7s6_540It’s been two years since the release of ‘Pain Is Beauty‘ and just one from the release of ‘Sing More Songs Together, the EP that Chelsea Wolfe created with King Dude. I would dare to say that the time feels right and the ground has been prepared in our minds and psyches by the previous albums of Chelsea Wolfe, for ‘Abyss‘, her forthcoming 5th studio album. The evoking title of the album  is self explanatory but is promising to absorb us, just as strongly as the previous albums of Chelsea Wolfe did. I have always found that the bigger emotional impact is not made by cold and static rhythms nor by harsh vocals, it is rather achieved through sad melodies using powerful ‘sad’ harmonies and hypnotizing vocals. When all these elements are combined with a smoky vocals, pulsating rhythms and a capturing performance, then you are up for an outwardly, strong and cathartic experience. Chelsea Wolfe emits an absorbing darkness aesthetically as well as through her lyrics and melodies. One could say that the impact of her music is equivalent of the one Ulysses has experienced from all the Sirens together during his trip to Ithaca. Chelsea Wolfe was singing  ‘Run from the one who comes to find you wait for the night that come to hide your eyes like an animal…‘ in ‘Pain Is Beauty’ and if the titles of songs hint at a story then ‘‘Carrion Flowers’‘ and ‘Iron Moon ( the known titles of some songs from her new album ) give us plenty of spiritual incentives so as to create our own dark stories until 7th August 2015, the official release date of ‘Abyss’ by Sargent House. You can preorder ‘Abyss’ by following this link: http://www.chelseawolfe.net/store/

Until then…

Frankfurt airport terminal_2012It is the month of the Wave Gotik Treffen and Blauerosen couldn’t be more excited for the 24th Wave Gotik Treffen that will be carried out between 22nd-25th May 2015 in Leipzig, Germany. It was on 2005 that I first attended the ‘mighty’ Wave Gotik Treffen festival, namely the biggest and more successful dark alternative festival in the world. Since then, I can’t encourage more strongly anyone who hasn’t attended this festival, to do so. When someone hears the words ‘music festival’ a vast open plot of land Kryptawith a big stage comes to mind and this is usually correct. But how about a whole city? Surely, if the Wave Gotik Treffen started today, then the idea of making every inch of a city part of a music festival would seem at least absurd! Wave Gotik Treffen transforms parks, historic monument ( i.e. Völkerschlachtdenkmal a.k.a Krypta), nightclubs, listed buildings (i.e. the Volkspalast who is now used as a multipurpose space, Kohlrabizirkus which used to be a wholesale market in the city and now is used as a multipurpose space ) into stages that host bands of different music styles each year. Even a themed village (i.e. Heidnisches Dorf a.k.a The Pagan Village) is constructed next to Agra Messepark the area that includes the biggest market, the biggest stage and the camping area of the festival. The Pagan Village aims at providing the necessary picturesque scenery for the appreciation of bands that are inspired and influenced by the aesthetics, the customs and the costumes of periods of the past (i.e. medieval times, periods of conquerors etc). Not to forget of course that places designed for classical music (i.e. The Opera of Leipzig and Schauspiel Leipzig) also host different types of live concerts during this festival. All these different and unique places receive numerous connotations every time that a band performs live, so the experience is really memorable and leaves a strong imprint to everyone in the audience. I will never forget  the live appearance of Diamanda Galas at Leipzig Opera in 2010, the live of Clock DVA at the mystical and imposing Volkspalast, the performance of Geneviève Pasquier  at Moritzbastei and the unique experience during the live appearances of Karjalan Sissit and Raison d’Etre at the ‘secret’ stage at the back of a seemingly ordinary cultural place called Schaubühne Lindenfels.

It’s been 2 years since the release of their last albumTransnationaland in May 2015 VNV (Victory Not Vengeance) Nation, one of the most loved bands of futurepop electro music that thrived a few years a go, will be releasing a new compilation album called ‘Resonance’. The band has collaborated with Babelberg Film Orchestra which is based in Potsdam and has revisited favourite tracks and club hits spanning their whole career since the release of ‘Advance And Follow’ in 1995. Babelberg Film Orchestra is famous for  live performances of silent films and has also collaborated with Rammstein in their last album ‘Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da’ and in the past with the rock band Karat.

‘Resonance’ includes new versions of songs such as ‘Beloved’, ‘Standing, ‘Perpetual’ and will be released in CD Digibook, CD igipack and Deluxe Limited Edition with 6 10” vinyls and 32 page booklet. R-6241460-1414537985-1893.jpegMartial Canterel a.k.a Sean Mc Bride, is a Brooklyn based cold wave/synth/minimal electro project that exists since 2002 and has released so far 9 full length albums in various formats including cassettes. In 2014 yet another great album entitled ‘Gyors, Lassú‘ was released by Dais Records in LP and digital format in 800 copies. Sean Mc Bride started the mostly punk/hardcore, project Moravagine before Martial Canterel and released a split cassette with Peter Punk in 2001 and the CDr called ‘Demos’ in 2003. Since 2009 Sean Mc Bride with Liz Wendelbo have formed Xeno and Oaklander,(who we’ve seen perform live at ‘The Waiting Room’ together with Phosphor) a new wave/synthpop band that is for me the music equivalent of the French new wave movies of Jean Luc Goddard. Following the path that Clair Obscur, Norma Loy, Bakterielle Infektion and most of the French coldwave bands have drawn and incorporating the melodies and the nice flowing rhythms of new wave style, Martial Canterel is a band with distinct characteristics. Uniqueness in music is difficult to be achieved and defined but i think that when Martial Canterel is played in a dancefloor, people can identify the band as easily they can tell if a track is by VNV Nation or Apoptygma Berzerk for example. The last few years we can see a renewed interest in cold wave/minimal electro and post punk music and there is a plethora of bands that have released music of this style. Martial Canterel focuses so far on diffusive vocals that are highlighted even more by the noisy, ‘dirty’ but rhythmic and dance multilayered sounds in the background. No wonder Martial Canterel is included in a lot of Djs’ playlists. Martial Canterel has started a european tour since 6/2/15 which includes Paris, Barcelona, various cities in Germany, Vienna, Turin, Wroclaw among others. We can only hope that the tour will include more dates and one of them will be in London which has a dedicated audience in this music genre (a few club nights have started the past three years and they have been quite popular so far) and would welcome Martial Canterel in the city! In the meantime you can buy ‘Gyors, Lassú’ by following this link: http://shop.daisrecords.com/products/martial-canterel-gyors-lassu-lp

Daemonia Nymphe is a Greek band created by Spyros and Pandelis Giasafakis in 1994 and since then, they have inspired their audience in Europe incessantly, by offering a unique combination of strong and dynamic melodies, interesting rhythmic and stylistic alterations within their compositions as well as unforgettable live performances. Daemonia Nymphe are collaborating with a dexterous manufacturer of traditional music instruments in Greece, Nikolaos Brass, who is providing them  with hand made ancient greek instruments which are resurrected through the band’s music. Thus the band is offering a unique experience to their audiences to see and listen to these instruments on stage. To those of you who will listen to this band for the first time, I can only say that the sound  is unique, drawing inspiration from  traditional greek music, world, eastern and balkan music traditions and creating an original sound with unending inspiration with the contribution of various collaborators throughout their career. Their previous performance at The Lexington of London which was dedicated to their latest album called ‘Psychostasia’ has been registered as an emotionally strong one by  this ethereal/ethnic/traditional but overall authentic band, Daemonia Nymphe. Daemonia Nymphe have presented  ‘Psychostasia: The Performance‘ on 23/3/14 at Riverside Studios in London which was very well attended and offered a complete picture of what the homonymous album is about. Since we cannot have enough of this band who offer a visually, musically and artistically interesting performances, I encourage all of you to attend this live at the Garage.
