It is so tempting to ‘see’ everything under the prism of the challenging times in which we are all living at the moment, so we will resist this and perceive the soundtrack of February as a wintry one which accompanies the long nights and the short days of the year.

logo playlistThere have been many debut releases during February, both from solo artists and from new collaborative projects between well-established musicians. Somehow, they all synced, as if they were responding to the same ‘calling’, as if they were following something with the same aura and the same final destination…The playlist of the month could almost be seen as different songs within the same album.

“As long as music is loud enough, we won’t hear the world falling apart”(‘Jubilee’ Derek Jarman)

logo playlistJanuary is typically a ‘quiet’ month in terms of gigs but very rich in its sonic output in terms of album releases. As a new decade has started and the world has not ended (sic) our favourite releases from this month are tracing a sonic path that took us from lyrical gothic to blues and from heavy psychedelia and industrial syncopation to dreamy and eerie soundscapes.

I am writing this review on a plane, having taken with me, the energy from last night’s powerful gig of The Chameleons at 229 the venue. This was the first of the two last gigs of 2019, which started with an electronic gig and ended with an experimental one.

Time he’s on my side…she said…” (lyrics: ‘Less than Human’)

Despite not having seen any familiar faces in the audience at this gig, it felt as if I was among friends. The Chameleons live photo There was strong anticipation in the air, people were discussing their experiences from other gigs of the band in other cities and others were just voicing their desire to listen to specific songs. There were two generations of fans in the venue and it was very evident that they all shared an adoration for The Chameleons.

A decade is about to end and we should all be grateful that a war that would affect the whole of the world did not happen. Other important political events around the globe, had a strong impact on everyone and most of the artists that we love, responded to them with sound, powerful soundscapes and dynamic lyrics. music_of_the_decade_best_albumsDuring this decade, Blaue Rosen, has been ‘born’, it has taken up a form and continues to evolve. We have been fascinated by new independent artists, independent labels, festivals that support new and well-established bands, and genre-defying artists. Each month we are publishing a new monthly playlist that contains our favourite releases so that we can create a soundtrack at the end of each year. Each monthly playlist is accompanied by mini reviews of each of the releases that it contains. In addition we constantly strive to take interviews from those musicians that inspire us the most and whose artistic qualities fascinate us. We will do more during the following years!

The music that has been written and has been performed during the last 10 years, tells a powerful story, unique to the period that inspired it. The visuals that accompany these albums, support this story at a symbolic level.  New bands have released amazing debut albums during this decade and well established, all-time favourite bands have taken up a ‘heavier’ sound, maybe as a response to the ‘heavier’ political climate around the globe. All this music accompanied us throughout these years and helped us evolve both our musical taste and our aesthetics.

These are the albums we distinguished out of each of the playlists we have created throughout the decade and the albums we danced to during the decade 2010-2019. Congratulations to all the musicians/bands!

Thank you for your support!

On an otherwise normal weekday evening, we gathered at this intimate theatre in Athens in order to listen to the new sonic offering by OTHON and Owen Pratt. Little did we know, that what we were about to witness would be a sort of personal procession through sound that both musicians would be creating for all of us.

“A poet is a nightingale who sits in darkness and sings to cheer its own solitude with sweet sounds.”
-Percy Bysshe Shelley

October was one of the most inspiring months of this year in terms of its independent music output, not only because Stephen Mallinder has released his first solo album for 37 years, but also because SWANS have ‘broken’ their self imposed hiatus. In October we also had the chance to enjoy some great debut releases by new bands showing a strong DIY element. If this monthly playlist was a person, they would be a kooky, abrasive and gothic looking one.
